5. 2. J-Phone to launch 3G on December 20
J-Phone will launch its 3G services on December 20, with a target of one million new subscribers by the end of 2003. The new service, called Vodafone Global Standard, will work on the GSM/UMTS migration path (which will eventually include 50 nations) and will be compatible with existing GSM/GPRS networks in Europe. DoCoMo launched 3G in Japan last October, but that company's service has failed to attract the number of subscribers the carrier had hoped for. In April of this year, KDDI launched its CDMA-based next generation services in the country. J-Phone has delayed the launch of its 3G service twice, citing problems with service roaming. J-Phone is 70 percent owned by Vodafone and claims 13 million subscribers. According to company statistics, 85 percent of J-Phone's subscribers use the carrier's mobile Internet services, including the company's popular Sha-mail picture messaging service.
6. MMS Revenues Expected to Soar
According to Juniper Research, multi media messaging (MMS) has the potential to reach revenues of $8.3 billion by 2004. It is expected that $5.6 billion of this revenue will be generated from content delivery. However, said Juniper, this figure is dependant on wireless carriers and manufacturers implementing cross-network MMS and roaming facilities and making available MMS enabled handsets and cameras that are affordable and user-friendly.
