6. Verizon Puts a Brake on CDMA EV-DO - 3G Data Only
Verizon Wireless has put the brakes on implementing fast, data-only CDMA EV-DO networks because of spectrum concerns, according to company CEO Dennis Strigl. Strigl, speaking to investors at a Lehman Brothers' telecom conference in Florida, says that although Verizon's EV-DO trials have been successful, he won't be jumping into implementing the technology anytime soon.  "It causes the carrier to use spectrum for data-only," Stringl explains. "And I'm not sure that in today's spectrum deficient environment that's something that is sustainable long-term."

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: 3G chugs along to finish the year with essentially a B- grade. Shall we say to the carrier community - keep at it with 2.5G migration to 3G and you will see 2.5G/3G adoption at a gradual but slow pace? It is interesting to note that Verizon is thumbs-down on CDMA EV-DO (Data only) implementation. Data-only networks are only for niche carriers, if at all, not for Verizon! Selling wireless data to the enterprise is something carriers have hard time learning
