New Wi-Fi Consortium To Specify
Secure Wi-Fi Mobility Management
The Wi-Fi Smart Card Consortium -- a major new initiative to define specifications for world-wide access to 802.11 networks by using smart card security and related capabilities -- will hold its plenary meeting in Paris, France on February 4-5, 2003. The new consortium will address the vexing issue of secure mobility management, one of the major hindrance which has hobbled the growth of WLANs. Using smart cards is likely to be the answer to several other wireless networking issues -- Wi-Fi security, quality of service, roaming, privacy, convenience, and related services. The consortium will endorse existing standards and define new specifications where needed. "The world-wide potential of Wi-Fi can be unleashed by using smart cards for security, roaming, and a full set of personalized services," says Bertrand du Castel, head of Smart Card Research at SchlumbergerSema and pro-tempore president of the consortium. The first plenary meeting in February will gather the founders of the organization. Founder status will be granted to any member signing the founding charter of the organization by the first day of the plenary session. Companies interested in becoming founding members of the consortium should visit the consortium's site at
