Airborne Express Successfully Outfits 10,000 Drivers
With Real-Time Tracking
January 8, 2003 - Somerset, N.J. - Airborne Express has successfully outfitted 10,000 of its pickup and delivery drivers with MobileDispatch™, a two-way, wireless messaging solution from Dynamic Mobile Data (DMD). The software solution has enabled Airborne dispatch personnel to monitor the entire pickup and delivery cycle of shipments and communicate with drivers in real-time via easy-to-use, handheld data terminals that virtually eliminate hand-written and verbal errors.
"MobileDispatch is a key component of Airborne's new, multi-million dollar nationwide wireless communication system," said David Billings, Airborne's senior vice president and chief information officer. "The solution has met our needs nationwide by creating a seamless communications platform that integrates our driver's handheld data devices with our main shipment tracking system. This capability has dramatically impacted the services provided to Airborne customers by enabling us to transmit and receive tracking, pickup, delivery and other vital information accurately and instantaneously from anywhere in the field."
New data terminals now allow Airborne customers to view signature images for shipments to most major metropolitan areas, providing a definitive proof of delivery. Slated for completion in June of 2003, the deployment of MobileDispatch is expected to include nearly 18,000 drivers throughout the country.
MobileDispatch was chosen by Airborne after a one-year pilot program at Airborne's Seattle-based facility. In addition to cost effectiveness, the wireless dispatch solution repeatedly demonstrated its accuracy, scalability, speed, reliability and ease of operation.

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: Airborne
has caught up with UPS and Fedex who have been using real-time
tracking of documents and parcels for several years. In today's
courier industry, it has become imperative to use wireless
technology coupled with scanning of a package as it arrives at
various points in its journey from the pickup point to its final
delivery. Business case for couriers is very sound. Do a keyword
search for Fedex and UPS on our site to find out about how the two
leaders are using this technology. This installation is a feather in
DMD's cap. It should help DMD.
