New York City Fire Department Deploys RIM's BlackBerry
After a two-month test, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) is rolling out BlackBerry wireless service at its headquarters, Research In Motion (RIM) announced. The BlackBerry service is equipped with MX software from Consilient Technologies. The MX software is being used to create a link between the FDNY's Novell GroupWise e-mail server and BlackBerry Enterprise Server so that FDNY headquarters can communicate securely with their mobile workforce using BlackBerry hand-held devices. The initial deployment of BlackBerry and MX is with the Office of the Fire Commissioner, the Chief of Department, and the Chief of Operations. Phase two of the FDNY deployment involves a rollout to a broader user group at the headquarters administrative level. (Source: Dow Jones Newswires) - more info

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: While
a majority of fire fighters are always looking for more
comprehensive solution, New York City Fire Department has decided to
use simple Blackberry platform to stay in touch with their work
force. After all, that is the most important communications link.
Sometimes, it is better to deploy a simple solution that can address
the most critical need. Later, you can address other application
needs. many a project wait too long for the ultimate solution - that
may take longer.
