Samsung & CPS Announce Joint Program for E-OTD Location Technology
3GSM World Congress, Cannes--Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd (CPS) today announce a joint programme to drive development of high accuracy low cost E-OTD location technology for the global 2G and 3G markets.
Under the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding), the two companies will work closely together on technology innovation for future integration into a range of Samsung products.
The programme - the first of its kind in the world - follows Samsung's announcement in July 2002 that it would be the first manufacturer to integrate E-OTD into a GSM handset. Subsequently, a number of Samsung handsets have completed software integration at CPS's UK facility.
The joint development programme will provide Samsung with access to the latest technology developments for GSM, including 50-metre accuracy for North America and other markets. The programme will also extend to 3G where CPS is developing its own high accuracy solution.
CPS Chief Executive Chris Wade said: "Samsung is a dynamic world leading company and we are delighted and honoured to be working with them on this exciting location technology development programme. We look forward to developing a close and committed working relationship to drive E-OTD forward for the benefit of their customers."
MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: It
is good to see less accurate but cheaper software-driven solution
from CPS compete with more expensive and more expensive GPS-driven
solution. the beneficiaries will be users and enterprises. CPS
solution is attractive from another important point of view - you do
not need to upgrade your handset. Simple software download should do
the trick with supported handsets.
