Game Developers Conference, San Jose, Calif., March 5, 2003 - Nokia, the global leader in mobile communications, and Metrowerks, maker of
CodeWarrior(tm) software and hardware development tools and services,
announced the release of an all-in-one developer kit for the Series 60
Platform. Metrowerks will distribute the advanced kit, which makes Series 60
application development in the CodeWarrior environment possible for the
first time.
Included in the new CodeWarrior Wireless Development Kit for Symbian
OS(tm), Nokia 3650 Edition is the popular Metrowerks CodeWarrior Development Studio
for Symbian OS(tm) v2, Personal Edition, and the newly released Series 60
SDK for Symbian OS(tm), jointly developed by Metrowerks and Forum Nokia,
Nokia's global developer program.
Also included in the bundle is a commercial-release version of Nokia's
newest Series 60 mobile device, the Nokia 3650 tri-band phone. The specially
priced bundle provides everything required to allow programmers to write,
debug, test, and deploy games and other applications right out of the box.
"The new CodeWarrior Developer Kit for Series 60 Platform makes the platform
easily accessible within one of the most popular mobile development environments," said Niklas Savander, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile
Software. "We are pleased to see more and more new Series 60 based applications being brought to market. An influx of programming talent, such
as the large community of Code Warrior developers, will further strengthen
the position of the Series 60 as the world leading smart phone platform."
Series 60 devices provide rich communications and enhanced applications
consisting of telephony and personal information management applications,
browser and messaging clients, and a modifiable user interface designed for
easy, one-handed operation. Series 60 is licensed to Nokia, Panasonic,
Samsung, Sendo and Siemens, which together represent almost two-thirds of
the global handset market. Running on top of the Symbian OS, an operating
system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones, Series 60 supports open and
common key technologies, such as MMS, Java, WAP/XHTML, and C++ / Symbian OS
(native).
"The Series 60 is a powerful multimedia platform that can support a new
generation of mobile applications - from interactive games, to multimedia
messaging, to location-based services," said David Clifton, vice president
of segment marketing, Metrowerks. "This special kit equips developers to
quickly and easily harness the power of the Series 60 Platform.
Metrowerks CodeWarrior Development Studio for Symbian OS(tm) is a
comprehensive, integrated set of software programming tools that enable
developers to create, debug and compile C/C++ Symbian applications for
Series 60 and other supported platforms based on Symbian OS. The tool set
provides timesaving features including complete Symbian build components and
descriptor presentation inside the debugger.
"CodeWarrior is a well-tested, well-developed toolset that has been
successful in multiple environments, including game development," said Paul
Zorfass, Senior Analyst, Embedded Solutions, IDC. "Given Nokia's market
share, and the capabilities of their Series 60 Platform, I expect this
