80% of New Mobile Phones To Have Bluetooth
By 2006
According to IDC, 80 percent of all new mobile phones and 70 percent of all PDAs are expected to come equipped with Bluetooth access in 2006, compared with only 2.7 percent of phones and 1.1 percent of handhelds in 2002. After almost a year-and-a-half of heavy analyst scrutiny, Bluetooth re-emerged at the end of 2002 as a potentially lucrative technology. Now insiders are singing its praise once again as a cost-saver and cable-cutter, despite competition from emerging standards like Ultrawideband (which is faster than Bluetooth) and ZigBee (which, while slower than Bluetooth, is alleged to be much cheaper to implement and uses a lot less power).
The ZigBee Alliance, including
Honeywell, Invensys, Mitsubishi Electric, Motorola and Philips
Electronics, is working on a specification that targets building
automation and home automation with low-cost, low-power devices that
are expected to last several years on two AA alkaline batteries.
With ZigBee, homeowners could build a network that would allow them
to wirelessly control everything from lighting fixtures to home
security systems.

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: We
believe that Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Zigbee all have their own unique
strengths. As such, it is no surprise that Bluetooth will succeed in
carving out for itself a niche connectivity role with smart
phones.
