Ericsson Supplies Integrated Multi-access Network (CDMA2000
& WLAN) to China Unicom
Ericsson announced that it has deployed a multi-access network based on its CDMA2000 network and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) solutions for China Unicom in the Sichuan province. Built on Ericsson's global 3G Connectivity Packet Platform (CPP), this seamless multi-access solution will allow China Unicom to efficiently and cost-effectively deliver advanced mobile Internet services to their customers.
"We are very pleased to further our successful relationship with China Unicom through supplying this CDMA2000 multi-access solution," said Åke Persson, president of Ericsson Mobile Systems CDMA. "This solution is yet another example of Ericsson's technology leadership and commitment to helping our customers supply the most advanced mobile Internet services to their customers."
Ericsson's CDMA2000 multi-access solution will enable China Unicom to complement their CDMA2000 network,
optimized for mobility and coverage in the wide area, with WLAN, which is
optimized for high-speed data in local area coverage and will support services in "hot spots," such as airports and conference
centers. This solution
enables the end-user to have an "always best connected" experience that offers seamless mobility with secure connections and the highest data rates possible, all from a single subscription.
"This seamless CDMA2000 multi-access solution will help China Unicom to ensure cost-effective delivery of data services to it customers, which will in turn help to increase the uptake of new services and generate new revenue streams for our customer," said Jan Malm, president, Ericsson China.
Ericsson currently supplies its total CDMA2000 1xRTT network to China Unicom in the Jiangsu, Anhui, Sichuan, Yunnan, Henan, Heilongjiang and Liaoning provinces.

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: It
is good to see Ericsson supply hybrid networks and it is even better
to see China Unicom install one because that is the way of the
future - the way we see it, anyway. We prefer a hybrid solution with
CDMA providing the roaming while on the move and Wi-Fi providing the
high speed connectivity when you are close to a hot spot.
