Extended Systems Provides Bluetooth Wireless Protocol Software for Xircom's
Next-Generation Products
Boise, ID - (Nov 30, 2000) Extended Systems (Nasdaq: XTND), a leading provider of mobile data management and wireless connectivity solutions,
announced today an agreement designed to introduce Bluetooth technology in Xircom's next-generation products. As part of this corporate-wide
agreement, Xircom has licensed XTNDAccess Blue SDK, Extended Systems' multi-purpose software development kit (SDK) for implementing Bluetooth
wireless protocols in handheld devices.
"A technology alliance with Xircom and their established presence in the
retail market enables us to extend Bluetooth wireless connectivity to more users than ever before," said Extended Systems CEO and president Steve
Simpson. "Combined with our support for more user profiles than any other protocol stack on the market, Xircom can enter a broad set of new markets as
well, and reduce development costs and accelerate time-to-market."
XTNDAccess Blue SDK has been qualified by the Bluetooth Special Interest
Group (SIG) for the following user profiles: General Access, Serial Port, Object Push, Dial-up Networking, LAN Access, FAX, Cordless Telephony,
Headset, and Intercom. The protocol stack works independent of a processor or operating system (OS), so the licensee's development team is free to
choose whichever OS or hardware provider best meets their needs. Because Extended Systems' kit features a multi-transport OBEX module, licensees can
develop products that support wired and/or wireless transports- including Bluetooth, IrDA infrared and serial- within the same device.
"We selected Extended Systems' SDK because of its small code size, portability, reliability and the company's experience in working with
industry leaders," said Fred Kern, senior director of marketing, Access Products Business Unit for Xircom. "Our agreement with Extended Systems
will ensure that Xircom stays atop the latest Bluetooth advancements to provide mobile users the most current wireless capabilities."
About Bluetooth Technology
Bluetooth is a specification for a small-form factor, low-cost radio solution providing links between PCs, mobile phones, and other portable
devices. The Bluetooth SIG, comprised of leaders in the telecommunications, computing, and network industries, is driving development of the technology
and bringing it to market.
Extended Systems was invited by SIG founder, Intel to participate in Bluetooth working groups to help develop the original specifications for
synchronization, object exchange and file transfer profiles. Extended Systems has been selected as an associate member of the SIG. This group
will shape the next generation of Bluetooth technology .
