Nettech Systems' Latest Smart IP Mobile Middleware Offers Enhanced Features for Digital Circuit-Switched Data - New Features Manage Coverage Glitches, Limit User Intervention; Improve Overall Performance, Reliability of Wireless Internet Applications

Princeton, N.J, April 3, 2000 - -Nettech Systems, the leading mobile middleware provider, today announced the availability of the latest version of Smart IP, which offers enhanced support for digital circuit-switched wireless data networks such as CDMA, GSM, PDC, PHS and others.

Smart IP is a mobile middleware product that allows Internet/intranet and IP-based applications to run over wireless networks efficiently. By understanding the mobile environment, Smart IP employs technology that increases the speed of transmission and minimizes user involvement to

create the best overall user experience.

Smart IP works out-of-the-box and uses proxy server technology to seamlessly support the Winsock application programming interface used by Internet and IP-based applications, while utilizing Nettech's Optimized Wireless Transport Protocol to send data over the air. Since it was designed for wireless applications, Smart IP offers "wireless-smart" features that allow applications to perform faster, easier, and more reliably than standard TCP/IP.

The latest version of Smart IP provides significant performance improvements over the wireless network, reducing the number of packets that are sent over the air and significantly improving response times.  For example, testing over a 32Kbps dial-up connection demonstrates that Smart IP reduces the amount of data sent over the air by 97% for 1000K files with a response time of 13 times faster. Smaller files show less dramatic, but still significant, performance improvements.

"As digital PCS carriers roll out data services and become more pervasive, we have enhanced support for these networks to include many sophisticated usability features designed to manage coverage glitches, limit user intervention and improve overall performance, reliability and usability," said Leon

Podolsky, vice president of Research and Development for Nettech Systems.

New Features

Smart IP features designed specifically for circuit switched wireless data networks include the following:

  •  Dial up networking control. For users of Microsoft platforms such as Windows® 98, Windows NT and Windows CE, Smart IP will control Microsoft's dial up networking capabilities, eliminating the need for the mobile user to first establish a data connection prior to sending data via the mobile application. This feature makes wireless data communication seamless and incredibly easy.

§ Auto-connect. If an application attempts to send data and there isn't already a data connection in progress, Smart IP will automatically establish a data connection with the network and begin to send the information.

§ Auto-reconnect. When mobile, users will occasionally experience breaks in their connection or gaps in coverage. If this occurs while a data session is in place, Smart IP will maintain a virtual connection, so that the application isn't interrupted, and automatically reconnect when coverage becomes available.

§ Auto-disconnect. Smart IP will automatically take down a data connection after a user-configured period of inactivity, eliminating the potential for users to unwittingly incur high airtime expenses by forgetting to disconnect.

§ Maintenance of persistent IP addresses. Smart IP maintains virtual sockets and/or sessions between data calls, removing the need for users to re-login and establish a new session with each call. This is accomplished using IP aliasing.

System Requirements, Pricing and Availability

Smart IP 2.0.1 supports all circuit-switched data networks, including CDMA, GSM and other next-generation circuit-switched data networks, along with a broad range of other wireless networks. Support varies according to product and platform. Hardware recommendations include devices supporting Windows CE, Windows 95 and 98 and Windows NT 3.5 or later, with MIPS, SH3 or X86 processors. Please consult the Nettech Web site (www.NettechRF.com) for complete support information.

Smart IP Version 2.0.1 for IP networks is now available for Windows 95, 98 and NT 3.5 or later starting at $52.50 per user. It will be available for Windows CE later in April.  Pricing varies according to volume and platform. OEM and Reseller Pricing Agreements are also available.
