PRESS RELEASE Hand Held Products Introduces World’s First PDF417 High Performance Cordless Linear Imager Frontline Solutions Show, October 3,2000 -- Hand Held Products®, a Welch Allyn® affiliate, announces the world’s first cordless PDF417 bar code scanner, IMAGETEAMÔ 3870 Cordless Linear Imager. Its linear imaging technology enables high-performance reading of PDF417, MicroPDF417, and all common linear bar code symbologies. Joining a family of rugged and reliable cordless products, the IT3870 is well suited for manufacturing, warehouse and distribution applications. The IT3870 allows an operator to work up to 50 ft (15 m) from the host system, and is well suited for scanning bar codes on large or awkward-shaped objects. Its two-way 2.4 GHz frequency hopping spread spectrum radio leads the industry for reliable communication in noisy environments. Up to nine scanners can be linked to a base, with each scanner having a unique ID and a unique set of operating parameters.
The
IMAGETEAM 3870 uses a rechargeable NiMH battery that delivers 25 hours of
operation or 18,000 scans. The novel battery system eliminates operator down
time because when one battery goes down it can be snapped off, plugged into
a wall for recharging, then a new battery can be snapped on. The automatic data collection device features a super fast reading performance, extra bright aiming beam, high-impact plastic construction, elastomeric “bumper”, “ready-to-grab & use” self-standing feature, and the industry’s best reading performance on poor quality labels. This device combines the best features of the popular IMAGETEAM 3800 tethered linear imager and the SCANTEAM 5770 cordless scanner. "Hand
Held Products IMAGETEAM 3870 Cordless Linear Imagers are sealed to an IP-54
rating, are rugged enough to handle 26 drops to concrete from six feet, and
are backed by an unprecedented three-year limited warranty," says Rob
Hussey, Product Manager. Targeting shipping and receiving applications, the IT3870 Linear Imager gives mobility for scanning PDF417 on shipping labels and supporting documentation. Also, the IT3870 is suited for factory and warehouse environments where multiple interference sources are common and where moving machinery presents a safety hazard. According to Rob Hussey, “These imagers pay for themselves in increased worker productivity and safety. The scanner is free to go wherever the bar code is, and the absence of a cord means no tangling and no awkward reaching.” Hand Held Products, a Welch Allyn affiliate, is the result of a combining of Welch Allyn Data Collection, Inc. and Hand Held Products, Inc. Together, the new organization offers the industry's most complete and affordable line of image-based data collection input devices to the global market.
