Press Release 2001
XCELLENET BROADENS MOBILE MANAGEMENT CAPABILITIES WITH
INTRODUCTION OF AFARIA DOCUMENT MANAGER FOR HANDHELD DEVICES
- ALSO ANNOUNCES SYNCHRONIZATION
ATLANTA (October 15, 2001) —
XcelleNet, Inc., the leading provider of management solutions for
remote systems and mobile & wireless devices, today announced
Afaria Document Manager for Handhelds. The company also announced
today Afaria Sync Manager, further confirming its position as the
leading vendor of mobile management solutions for popular handheld
devices.
In another announcement today,
XcelleNet Enhanced Afaria with Synchronization Capabilities, Taking
its Mobile Management Solution to the Next Level.
Afaria Document Manager for Handhelds
assures that mobile workers using devices based on the Palm or Windows
CE/Pocket PC platforms have access to critical business documents and
data, both on or offline. Similar to Afaria’s Document Manager
designed for Win 32 laptops, the Handheld version offers subscription
and publishing capabilities that translates documents into formats
that can be viewed and subscribed to directly from a handheld device.
Information is received quickly and transparently over a variety of
wireline or wireless connectivity options. Once receiving a document,
users simply click on that document to launch the appropriate viewer.
For Windows CE devices, Document
Manager automatically converts Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, HTML
and plain text files into formats that can be read by the Pocket Word,
Pocket Excel and Pocket Explorer applications on the device.
For Palm OS devices, documents are
converted and accessible through technology provided by DataViz(R),
Inc, developers of Documents To Go(R). As distributed by Afaria, this
functionality allows for the viewing of Microsoft Word, Excel and text
files on Palm OS devices. Once users have received the documents, they
simply tap on the document title and the appropriate viewer will
automatically launch the file for viewing.
"Afaria’s Document Manager
ensures that up-to-date, critical information is in the hands of
mobile professionals when they need it," said Rob Hoxie, director
of business development at DataViz. "We see the incorporation of
Documents To Go technology into Afaria’s product as a way to extend
DataViz’s contribution to the enterprise sector."
"The ability to manage and
coordinate the flow of critical documents and files between a
centralized information resource and mobile devices in the field is
fast becoming a mandate for most companies, especially those that want
to maintain a cooperative and collaborative mobile work
environment," observes Tim Scannell, an analyst with Mobile
Insights, Inc. "XcelleNet has neatly wrapped this function into
its Afaria product, taking mobile management to a whole new level of
application control and flexibility."
"In order for companies to reap
the economic benefits of mobile deployments, devices in the field must
be supported by a management solution that guarantees the productivity
requirements of the enterprise," commented Joe Owen, CTO of
XcelleNet. "Adding additional data management functionality to
Afaria confirms XcelleNet’s commitment to helping companies grow
their mobile workforces to better serve customers out in the field
through fast, reliable and secure information exchange."

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Afaria
is moving in the right direction by adding document distribution and
synchronization capabilities to its systems management core product
base through integration of third party data distribution and
synchronization products under one virtual umbrella.
This best-of-breed strategy is a smarter move, we think, rather than
creating its own version of these products.
