June 28, 2001 - Pumatech Introduces Browse-it(TM) 3.0 Software
- New Features Include Enhanced Off-line Services, Improved Layout Quality
And Faster Performance
Pumatech Will Demonstrate Browse-it 3.0 In Booth #4230 At PC Expo
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Pumatech Inc. (Nasdaq: PUMA), the leading provider of software infrastructure for the mobile Internet, today
announced availability of its Browse-it(TM) version 3.0 software, a leading-edge Web rendering/browsing solution for Palm OS(R) handhelds. Among
its new features, Browse-it 3.0 offers enhanced off-line services such as
off-line form submission, which allows Web-based forms (e.g., a company
expense form) to be stored on a device and filled out while off-line. This
capability will enable users to submit all expense forms wirelessly while on
the road, or via cradle synchronization when they return to the office.
Additionally, Browse-it 3.0 provides improved layout quality and performance,
giving users a richer, faster experience. With this new version of Browse-it,
mobile workers will be able to dramatically increase productivity by having
the ability to work both on- and off-line, regardless of their location or
connection method. Pumatech will demonstrate Browse-it 3.0 in booth #4230 at
PC Expo in New York City, June 26-28.
"Our expanded service support with Browse-it further illustrates our goal
of enabling all users to access any Web content on- or off-line from their
mobile devices," said Brad Rowe, Pumatech president, CEO and co-founder. "We
aim to provide the highest quality of Web content to all of our audiences,
including corporate users and consumers. In order to provide Web content to
the largest number of people, it is important that we extend our offering by
providing off-line Web services that meet the needs of the enterprise."
Browse-it is one component of Pumatech's Mobile Application Platform
(MAP), the common server platform designed to help ISVs, SIs, and OEMs extend
content to the enterprise. Designed for maximum scalability and performance,
MAP also includes synchronization capabilities and Pumatech's Mind-it(R)
change detection and notification software.
NEW FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF BROWSE-IT 3.0
When connected to a wireline or wireless modem, Browse-it transforms Palm OS handheld devices into powerful information appliances, giving mobile
users full and immediate access to information and applications on the Web
-- anytime, anywhere. Browse-it was designed with the user experience in mind
and employs the look and feel of desktop browsers, offering features such as
bookmarks, the ability to track browser history, and support for cookies,
standard graphic formats, encryption for security, compressed archives, and
downloading and installation of native programs and data. Browse-it also
provides a SnapShot feature that enables users to capture Web content for
viewing off-line when wireless or wireline Web access is unavailable. Browse-it 3.0 now includes an enhanced feature set that further extends the
product's usability in enterprise environments:
-- Stay Connected While Off-line. With Browse-it Off-line Services, SnapShots of Web-based information can be taken and stored on a device
locally. SnapShots can be updated wirelessly or through cradle-based synchronization, resulting in the most up-to-date information available
off-line. In addition, if users need information that is not available
off-line, they can either go on-line and get the information or they can make
an off-line request for the information, and it will be downloaded to their
devices through wireless or cradle synchronization.
-- Color SnapShot and Font Support. Users can now enjoy color SnapShots, based on the color depth that their handheld devices support. Browse-it 3.0
offers 16-bit color support (over 65,000 colors), and also works with four new
fonts.
-- Synchronous Form Submission. When users submit a form or batch of forms during cradle synchronization, they receive the results of the
submission during the same connected session.
-- Asynchronous Form Submission. For both wireless and cradle synchronization, a user can now submit a form or a batch of forms and then log
off. If users have a meeting or appointment, they can take their Palm
handheld with them, and the next time they synchronize, the results of the
previous submission will be downloaded to their device, giving them the
benefit of synchronizing faster and not having to wait for the information.
-- Off-line Requests. This new feature allows users to make an Off-line Request for information not available in a current SnapShot. Users will be
asked if they want to go On-line or if they would like to make an Off-line
Request. Choosing an Off-line Request will enable them to retrieve the link
and SnapShot information the next time they sync, making the SnapShot available to them while off-line.
