Mobile Computing Market Outlook Reports

Title of the Report
Strategy Analytics Forecasts 500 Million Cellular Shipments in 2001 & 1 Billion by 2006. Nokia extends market share & Margin Leadership

Company - Strategy Analytics (formerly BIS)

Date - March 2001

Brief Description
Boston, MA According to a new study released by Strategy Analytics Inc, global cellular handset shipments will grow at 17% annually over the next 5 years. Replacement will be the dominant factor in handset sales in North America and W. Europe over the next five years.

These findings are presented in “Worldwide Cellular Shipment Forecasts (2001-2006)” a study published recently by Strategy Analytics within its Wireless Device Strategies service.

“Contrary to the current bearish sentiment, Strategy Analytics remains optimistic about the prospects for cellular handset volume in the coming years. Despite strong performance and the addition of 200 million new users in 2000, the wireless industry is just entering the rapid growth phase of its life cycle. Global penetration remains at only 11%,” comments David Kerr, Vice President of Strategy Analytics’ Global Wireless Practice. The new report highlights three critical factors that impacted the handset market in 2000:

1) Severe component shortages that impacted the performance of several vendors.
2) The handset industry once again disappointed the network operators with continued slippage in time to market with new 2.5G devices.
3) Handset replacement cycle assumptions to support the bullish 450 million total shipment target proved to be overstated in part due to the lack of compelling application on WAP and absence of GPRS handsets.

“2000 was a year when Nokia continued to extend its leadership in market share while maintaining handset margins 5-6 times of those recorded by their nearest rivals. With Ericsson and Motorola both abdicating their titles at least in terms of contenders for the mass market, the door has been flung open for a new battle between Siemens, Samsung, Mitsubishi and possibly Alcatel to compete for volume.”
