Mobile Computing Market Outlook Reports

Title
Strategy Analytics Forecasts 1.7 Billion Wireless Subscribers by 2006 - One in Four of Global Population to Own a Cellphone

Company - Strategy Analytics (formerly BIS)

Date - March 2001

Brief Description
Boston, MA According to a new study released by Strategy Analytics Inc, the global cellular market will double in size to 1.7 billion by the end of 2006. More than half of the world’s cellphone users are currently in N. America and W. Europe but these regions will account for only 20% of growth over the next five years.

These findings are presented in a study published recently by Strategy Analytics within its Wireless Network Strategies service. This service provides leading players in the industry with insights into key market, technology, and consumer behavior trends. The company’s latest report “Worldwide Cellular User Forecasts (2001-2006)” provides detailed forecasts of installed base, penetration and service revenues by major region and air interface.

“The W. European cellular market has grown at a phenomenal rate over the last two years, but this growth will slow dramatically over the next two,” comments Phil Kendall, a Director in Strategy Analytics’ Global Wireless Practice.

The report notes that neither S. E. Asia nor the Rest of World will display any significant slowdown in penetration gains over the next five years. The Rest of the World, driven by strong growth in Latin America and Central Europe, will double its share of the global market from 16% today to 33% in 2006.

GSM-based systems will continue to dominate the worldwide cellular landscape over the next five years, accounting for 55% of the market in 2006. CDMA systems will support 470 million users by 2006, accounting for 28% of worldwide users. N. America has emerged as the largest region for CDMA users, helped by strong growth on the networks of Sprint and Verizon.
