i-mode Overview:

  • Japan’s NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode service, which enables users to access Internet services via their cellular phone, was launched in August of 1999.
  • NTT DoCoMo the world’s largest mobile-phone carrier with a market cap value of $263-billion (2001).
  • As of February 2002, the service had over 31 million subscribers, adding over 100,000 new subscribers every week.
  • Total of 25,100 content sites comprising of 1,100 official sites and 24,000 unofficial or voluntary sites.
  • Service transmitted over DoCoMo Packet Transmission Network (PDC-P or DoPa).
  • Voice Communication on DoCoMo Network (PDC).
