Location-Based Services

Technology Components

Following technology components make this happen:

  • GPS (or similar hardware or software) receivers, e.g. in handsets,

  • Software in base stations that uses time of arrival from the handset and triangulation algorithms to determine position,

  • Vehicle telematics hardware

  • Add-on receivers for PDA's or laptops

Cell site or cell site triangulation (e.g. E-OTD for GSM Networks) equipment and software are being deployed in the U.S. Any kind of wireless link can and has been used to get the position information to a server - including satellite, conventional land/mobile radio, and cellular/PCS.
