Motorola and RIM Introduce J2ME – Enabled Wireless Communication and Computing Platform

At the recent JavaOne Conference, Sun Microsystems' latest version of Java for mobile devices – Java 2 platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™) -- was demonstrated by many vendors including Motorola and RIM.

J2ME technology provides a robust development environment based on open standards while accommodating inherent constraints such as battery life, memory, processing powers and bandwidth. The new handset platform enables secure, dynamic downloading of applications to a range of wireless devices.

Motorola, Inc. introduced iDEN® multiple communication handhelds that support J2ME platform. The new handsets will enable mobile workers:

  • To place and receive telephone calls
  • To receive text messages
  • To access Internet content
  • To send and receive email
  • To program the phone to function as a wireless modem

With J2ME, iDEN multiple communication phones could run local and networked J2ME-based applications, allowing enterprises to extend their networks to the mobile environment.

iDEN handsets operate on integrated wireless networks, including Nextel National Network.

Research in Motion (RIM) introduced its Development Environment for Java technology that will support its product line. The company’s Early Access Development Environment for J2ME and its earlier release of J2ME Connected Limited Device configuration (CLDC) will provide developers with the tools to create Java-based technology applications for its Blackberry™ and wireless handhelds.

RIM’s Early Access Development Environment will be made available later this year.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: J2ME is moving forward - it is a good development platform for product and application developers alike because handhelds, unlike PCs span multiple operating systems and hardware platforms.
