Lucent Public Safety Systems and Navigation Technologies Partner in Digital Mapping

By October 2001, the FCC Phase II mandate will require that an emergency agency be able to locate a person making a wireless 9-1-1 call to within 100 feet of the phone’s location. To address the challenges facing public safety agencies in meeting the FCC’s mandate, Lucent Public Safety Systems (LPSS), a Lucent Technologies venture, and Navigation Technologies have announced that they will collaborate to bring LPSS’s Palladium® PSMap™ Solution to the public safety market.

By combining the expertise of LPSS and Navigation Technologies, in the public safety industry and digital mapping technology, respectively, the PSMap Solution brings together applications, information, infrastructure, and support into a single, cost effective, and scalable solution.

Benefits to Public Safety Answering Points

The PSMap Solution is designed to help Public Safety Answering Points’s (PSAPs) administrators and dispatchers to receive emergency calls, obtain the caller’s name, location, and problem, and then to alert the proper agency in the caller’s area.

  • A detailed map, in real-time, will be available for every call thus enabling the PSAP to manage calls inside or outside its jurisdiction.
  • The PSAP will have the ability to follow a cellular call wherever it may go.
  • The solution requires limited maintenance required by PSAPs.
  • The PSMap solution provides fast and reliable services with the most accurate and comprehensive mapping data commercially available.

"Today, wireless E9-1-1 calls represent approximately 25 percent to 30 percent of all 911 calls, with an expected annual increase of 6 percent to 8 percent in the next few years," said Bob Oliver, President of LPSS. "These trends underscore the requirement for accurate and immediate mapping capabilities."
