Palm To Acquire WeSync to Enhance Wireless Sync

With the growing hype and interest surrounding the mobile Internet, users will not be satisfied with just mobility features but will want real-time information while on the go. In anticipation of this growing trend, Palm, Inc. has been positioning itself first by acquiring AnyDay.com, a provider of Internet-based calendar solutions, then by launching its personal mobile portal, MyPalm™, and now by purchasing WeSync, a provider of group-information sharing for handheld devices.

WeSync’s talent and resources will enable Palm to move beyond syncing information between a user’s handheld and their PC – freeing users from being tethered to their PCS. In time, Palm handheld users will be able to share information among colleagues or family members via the Web, mobile phones, and servers behind a corporate firewall. WeSync’s ability to wirelessly sync Web-based content such as work-related and group schedules among multiple users on multiple devices will yield important capabilities for Palm customers, said Jim Forbes, senior analyst and producer of DemoMobile.

Short Term Benefits

  • Palm will integrate WeSync’s Web properties and capabilities into AnyDay’s Web calendaring service.
  • AnyDay’s resources have enabled Palm to launch its MyPalm portal which will evolve over the coming months to provide such services as banking, personal Web pages, and downloading of applications.
  • WeSync will enable MyPalm users to share calendar address, database, and other information with a host of professional groups.

Long Term Benefits

  • The addition of WebSync’s engineering talent will give Palm customers more capabilities around N-way, wireless and Web synchronization.
  • Palm plans to integrate WeSync’s technologies, including a synchronization protocol optimized to share information wirelessly, into the Palm platform in a technically elegant and robust way.
  • Palm along with its 130,000 registered developers will be able to deliver new classes of workgroup applications and to build on its expertise in wireless data access.
