Telia Introduces IP-based GSM

Telia Mobile claims that it will be the first telecommunications vendor to bring IP-based GSM technology to market.

The new technology is designed to address the technical problems of interfacing a GSM network with other IP-based networks. It eliminates the need to build up different networks for data and voice, the company says. The IP-based GSM brings together data, Internet, mobile and IP telephony under the same network.

Overview of Telia’s IP-GSM Technology

  • The infrastructure links together all communication via computer, the Internet, mobile and IP telephony in one mobile system.
  • Base stations for GSM are connected to the company’s LAN, which provides GSM coverage for local traffic. The fixed telephony traffic is transferred from the company switch to the data network and external communication goes via the Internet.
  • Users will have only one phone number for calling from a mobile phone, PC, multimedia terminal or fixed IP telephone.
  • Equipped with a WAP-phone mobile workers can access the company’s database within GSM coverage.

Telia Bright, the Telia unit handling the new technology, has been working with ABB in Vastera, Sweden, to pilot test the new technology. Pelle Lindvall, head of Telia Bright, said, "Once the tests are completed in the early autumn, we will commence sales operations in earnest."
