Webraska and ACUNIA Co-operate to Offer In-Vehicle Navigation Services

Despite the small number of current users of in-vehicle navigational services, analysts are predicting the telematics market will escalate by 2005. With their sights set on this lucrative market, Webraska and ACUNIA have combined their areas of expertise, wireless navigation services and telematics technology, respectively, to offer car manufacturers wireless navigational services. Webraska will port its IbDN™ (Internet based Distributed Navigation™) technology in the ACUNIA telematics environment, the company said.

Under the terms of the agreement, Webraska will use the ACUNIA Service Development Kit (SDK) to develop and implement a distributed navigation service for use on ACUNIA’s Open Telematics Framework, a Java-based open software designed for the entire telematics pipeline. This will ensure that each hardware platform compatible with the ACUNIA technology will automatically be able to host the Webraska navigation services, Webraska said.

Webraska’s IbDN technology allows car manufacturers to benefit from the data on or interfaced via its Global Navigation Server, which can be linked to any application, Internet provider, or external database. For the driver this means taking advantage of a dynamic navigation service that includes voice turn-by-turn directions that accounts for real-time events, such as traffic and road conditions, and continuity of service to mobile phones, PDAs, and wired phones.

"Webraska’s objective is to offer the automotive industry a worldwide availability of its wireless navigation distributed in-car services and server technologies, on a platform that the car manufacturers and their partners will select," says Bruno Bourguet, general manager for the Webraska Automotive Group. The structured and open approach of the ACUNIA technology platform will facilitate the roll out and evolution of in-vehicle wireless application and services, he added.

The partners expect to have the first pilot with a car manufacturer in place and running during the first quarter of this year.
