Trivanti Speeds-up Connection Time to Wireless Web

The U.K. company Trivanti, a joint venture between Psion and United Business Media, has launched a wireless Internet connection service, Trivanti QuickConnect, that promises to reduce the time to connect to the Internet over a GSM network by two-thirds. The service is being made available in the U.K. with plans to launch services worldwide.

The service is ideal for the mobile professional using a WAP-enabled PDA who is annoyed at how long it takes to connect to the wireless Web. According to Trivanti it takes an average of 25 seconds for most regular ISPs to establish a full modem set up session versus just eight seconds via the Trivanti QuickConnect service.

Customers can also access Trivanti QuickConnect via a regular modem connection.

The chief technical officer at Trivanti, Simon Luttrell explained that the Trivanti servers use protocols which enable users to connect in typically a third of the time taken for a non-ISDN connection.

"The new service reduces the average time it takes to establish a data connection via GSM networks by deploying V110 ISDN protocol technology and making use of the ISDN subset capabilities of GSM handsets. In a mobile environment this timesaving makes a big difference," Luttrell said.

The short-term outlook of the Trivanti QuickConnect service is promising as it will notably improve the user’s mobile Internet experience today, but the long-term prospects for such a service appear short lived with the advent of the deployment of 2.5G networks offering ‘always on’ connectivity.

In the meantime, as the world waits for "the promise land of always-on" wireless data services, "Trivanti is committed to enhancing the wireless Internet through innovation in technology and service that make a difference to the individual users," commented Gareth Hughes, CEO of Trivanti.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: The industry had been told of this problem for some time but thought that circuit-switched will go away. It did not and will be around for some time till mobile IP and wireless IP are standards and packet switching is the only norm. Therefore, we applaud Trivanti to cut down connect time on GSM.
