RIM To Attract Lotus Notes Users

IBM and RIM in Agreement - IBM Global Services to Sell Blackberry-based Enterprise e-mail Solutions

In a move to increase its share of the corporate market, Research In Motion Ltd. announced that its Blackberry e-mails devices, which have only been sold to users of Microsoft Exchange, are now available to organizations that use Lotus Notes e-mail system.

With Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange having 52 percent and 36 percent of the corporate market, respectively, this announcement will more than likely double the number of enterprise customers, the company said.

What does Blackberry offer the professional mobile user?

  • An integrated e-mail/organizer software
  • PC docking cradle
  • Desktop utilities
  • Enterprise server software
  • Single mailbox integrated with Lotus Domino
  • Advanced encryption technology
  • Easy-to-use interfaces
  • Always-On connectivity
  • Flat rate air-time on nationwide wireless networks

In addition, RIM and Lotus Development Center announced that they will work together to develop and market mobile and wireless communications solutions, including defining further integration between RIM and Lotus products and providing enhanced mobile access to messaging and applications for corporate customers.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  This is a good news for RIM and Lotus Notes users.  It should help Lotus Development in retaining its share of the messaging market. As far as agreement between IBM and RIM announced on January24, 2001 is concerned, it opens the entire marketing power of IBM Global Services to the benefit of RIM. Use of Blackberry by IBM field engineers is a validation of Blackberry as an enterprise device. IBM's choice between WorkPad (a PalmOS device under IBM label) and Blackberry is significant. What we would like to see is future porting of the more comprehensive field service application (including electronic ordering of parts and completion of service report) that field engineers use on to Blackberry or its follow-on product. This application currently runs on IBM ThinkPads.
