Wireless Data Services Officially Launches its Over the Air Wireless Configuring Tool

Wireless Data Systems intends to eliminate user frustration of remotely configuring their wireless devices, with the launch of its standard Over The Air (OTA) Wireless Configuration Tool branded mouse2mobile.com. The application is hosted within the WDS Europe server and application facility and licensed out to manufacturers, network operators, service providers, content providers, and corporate users. Using its three global Customer Contact Centers, WDS collates, verifies, and manages services settings on a global basis thus ensuring that core content is constantly updated.

Mouse2mobile.com, a database driven Internet solution, offers users a simplified process of updating their wireless handset with new settings, such as WAP settings, bookmarks, and ringtones. Users can refigure their handsets by following the options from a Web site. Users will be prompted to enter their residing country, model of phone, and mobile telephone number, mouse2mobile.com will offer a selection of WAP services, and will update the user’s device via SMS.

Commenting on the benefits of service, Mike Maskell, operations director at Ericsson, said that mouse2mobile.com is an excellent end-to-end solution that constantly manages the content thus allowing Ericsson to speed up WAP support and give our customers a wider portfolio of services.

In addition to WAP settings, the tool allows the configuration of smartphones with features such as customized icons and ringtones, and easy access to Web-based messaging.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  With millions of web-enabled phones, on-the-air configuration will be required as software or micro-code in smart phones needs to be updated. We applaud Wireless Data to be among the early group of vendors in addressing this need. Vendors and carriers, we need a standard here, please! In future, a mini-version of device management for smart phones offered by companies like Synchrologic, Afaria and Extended Systems for handheld devices will become important.
