Most carriers, including Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, and America West are offering frequent flyers wireless access to flight information via Web-enabled phones, two-way pagers, and PDAs.Confronted with such competition, Alaska Air Group has said that two of its carriers, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air Industries, will be offering wireless check-in capabilities to passengers with Palm handhelds or Web-enabled cell phones. Initially, the Seattle-based Alaska Airlines will roll out service at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, while Horizon Air has yet to announce details of its check-in service. Both airlines already offer passengers wireless access to flight schedules and frequent flyers information. The new service will let travelers check in for flights on their own. By downloading free software from the carrier’s Web site, a passenger can check in via their wireless phone at the airport. Once checked in, travelers can go directly to the designated gate, show photo identification, and board the plane.
