American Airlines Launches New Flight Status Alert Service

American Airlines’ flight status notification system is designed on the notion that more is better – more communication choices from voice to text from wired to wireless would appeal to the airline traveler.

In partnership with Appriss, an ASP, American Airlines unveiled its Flight Status Notification service which is being made available to all the airlines passengers.

American Airlines’ Flight Status Notification differs from the competition.

  • Made available to all its customers - not only VIP or frequent flier customers.
  • Offers text-based messaging along with voice messaging.
  • Enables the passenger to choose how, when and by which device they prefer to be notified; for example, the passenger may choose voice, e-mail, or wireless messaging via a telephone, pagers, or text enabled wireless phone or PDA.

The Fight Status Notification Service

  • Traveler logs on to www.aa.com/notify , connecting to Flight Status Notification service.
  • Selects preferred method of contact: phone or wireless device.
  • Enters flight number to be tracked.
  • Specifies a notification time.
  • Indicates that they prefer to be contacted in the event of a timer or gate change or flight cancellation.

Until wireless services become generally adopted by the general population, companies may have to offer similar multi-choice services if they intend to serve its entire customer base as opposed to just VIP or frequent flier travelers.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: AA is moving aggressively to offer wireless-based notification to all passengers. We think that this application will fly.  We like the fact that all passengers can subscribe to this service. Multi-mode (voice, cellular telephone, pager or PDA) support is also very prudent.
