Cell-Loc Partners with Nortel Networks to Test Wireless Location Services

In anticipation of the mass-market demand for wireless location-specific services, Cell-Loc Inc. has teamed with Nortel Networks to commence trials of a location-sensitive service via voice-activation in Texas this April. Subject to trial outcomes, wireless operators and services providers can expect the wireless Internet solutions to be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

The new service combines the expertise and solutions of both companies.

  • Nortel Networks Voice Navigation System and National Directory Assistance
  • Cell-Loc’s position collection and distribution system (PCDS) location middleware
  • Cellocate Position determination equipment (PDE) from Cell-Loc

The Trial

  • Mobile phone users will dial a pre-arranged phone number.
  • The caller’s location is automatically determined by way of Cell-Loc’s Cellocate network, which is based on TDOA, time difference of arrival, location technology.
  • Caller’s voice request for a location specific service, such as ATM, gas station or restaurant, is translated into data via the Voice Navigation System.
  • National Directory Assistance then searches for the nearest location.
  • The directions to the specific location are sent via a voice message to the user’s mobile phone.

The companies said that the service will operate not only on existing networks and today’s mobile phones, but also will be accessible through other interfaces to support high-end PDAs and Internet-enabled phones.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This is a good partnership between vendors who understand respective technologies and markets well. However, location-specific applications will take a while to start producing revenues. Will Cell-Loc become profitable soon?
