NEWS PRODUCTS, SERVICES & APPLICATIONS Equant Launches Global WAP Roaming for Corporate Users Mobile professionals traveling outside their home WAP network must make costly international or intercontinental mobile calls to their home WAP network to access WAP services. The Atlanta-based Equant is out to change that with the launch of its WAP roaming service, Global WAP Access. The service will enable corporate users to have closer access to their user group WAP applications from outside their WAP home network, the company said. With Global WAP Access, the corporate traveler can have direct access to WAP services by simply making a local roamed call. The company says this will result in significant cost saving, up to 40 percent or more for the intercontinental traveler. Initially, the Global WAP Access service will be available in 22 countries, including France, Italy, and the U.K., with plans for a U.S. launch by the end of this year. With an upgrade of its Remote Access services, Equant’s network can now support V.110 digital signaling used in GSM phones. This eliminates the need for the mobile network to revert to a slow analogue modem interface when communicating with Equant’s network. According to Richard Blaustein, vice president of Equant Lines of Business, "Equant’s fully digital network path can deliver connection times much faster than a standard analogue connection, improving from 45 to 75 seconds to a mere 10 to 20 seconds." Wireless networks have multiple hops and maximum delays are in the first hop which may not change with this solution. However, using Internet backbone to access WAP applications in your home base will help some travelers. Note: This news release may contain forward-looking statements.
