Kasten Chase Partners with RIM To Serve U.S. Government Defense Personnel

Last year, Blackberry devices were popular among former vice president Al Gore’s campaign workers and now these ubiquitous devices will soon be found in the hands of U.S. Department of Defense personnel.

Kasten Chase said last week that it has partnered with Research In Motion Inc. to deliver secure wireless access to the U.S. Government’s Defense Message System (DMS) via RIM’s Blackberry wireless e-mail solution. Of the 2 million potential DSM users, the wireless service will initially target 300,000.

The solution will integrate Kasten Chase’s RASP Data Security for wireless applications and message handheld software with RIM’s Blackberry e-mail solution.

A critical component of the solution is ensuring that the security meets government standards for remote access to the DMS. As Don Morrison, chief operating officer at RIM, explained, "End-to-end, Triple DES encryption technology is a key component of the Blackberry solution for Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino environments. Similarly, the Kasten Chase RASP Data Security solution for wireless communications will provide the approved technology and enhanced security features necessary for DMS environments."

Specifically, Blackberry with RASP Data Security will provide authentication of sender and receiver; end-to-end confidentiality; integrity of message content, and non-repudiation. In addition the integrated solutions will be fully compatible with global DMS desktop systems, the companies said.

The integrated solution is scheduled for release later this year.
