IBM Partners with Ericsson To Develop Mobile Internet for the Financial Sector

Currently financial institutions from banks to investment firms are deploying wireless pilot projects to a select customer base of a few hundred. To meet the anticipated demand for wide spread deployment of financial services, IBM and Ericsson have partnered to offer the necessary infrastructure to deploy higher value financial services to hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide.

By combining Ericsson’s expertise in wireless telecommunications with IBM’s reputation in financial services and information technology, the companies will develop and market an offering to meet the specific requirements of the financial service sector. In a joint statement the two companies said that the technology will enable more than just retrieving checking account information, but also high-volume Business-to-Client services such as wealth management, account aggregation, mobile trading, and credit card and payment alerts.

Components of the Solution

  • Ericsson’s Mobile Internet application that includes Ericsson's Mobile e-Pay, Safetrader and WAP Gateway
  • IBM WebSphere Everyplace Suite
  • IBM eServer line of products
  • IBM Global Services will provide consulting and IT integration services

Commenting on the alliance, Lars Boman, president of Ericsson Internet Applications, said, "IT will accelerate the uptake of Mobile Internet for financial services and will drive the development of additional applications and traffic volume for GPRS and 3G in this sector."

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This partnership is significant. IBM is strong in systems integration and understands the financial business. Some of the largest financial institutions in the world use IBM infrastructure.  Ericsson is a leader in 3G networks.  Once IBM has successfully implemented serious financial applications on Ericsson networks,  it will be able to support on other non-Ericsson networks with only a delta effort.
