Japan Telecom and Nakayo To Develop New Infrared Communications Systems

Japan Telecom Co. and Nakayo Telecommunications Inc. have developed a new, highly reliable infrared communications system, reported the Dow Jones.

During a press briefing in Tokyo, the two companies said that advances in infrared and wireless communications technologies allowed for the development of a new infrared communications system that can transmit data wireless at speeds of up to 6 mbps and at a distance of up to 200 meters.

An official said that they had not experienced any errors during the testing of the new technology, even during adverse weather conditions. This marks a great improvement over the current infrared technologies that often fail during severe weather conditions, added the official.

The two companies expect to offer the technology to corporate customers. With respect to the retail price, a Japan Telecom representative said," All we can say is that it’ll be cheaper than Nakayo Telecommunication’s current equipment which transmits data at a speed of 2 mbps and cost 4-million yen."
