Palm Ventures Invests in Kenamea To Attract Enterprise Market

In its commitment to leverage the ‘Palm economy,Palm Ventures, the strategic investment arm of Palm Inc., has invested, an undisclosed amount, in Kenamea, Inc. to expand its offering of enterprise applications.

Palm intends to leverage the Kenamea’s platform that promises to accelerate the availability of next generation enterprise applications that can be easily extended to Palm OS devices.

The Santa-Clara based company says that the platform is expected to change the way Internet users interact with information and services. In addition, the software is device and network independent making it well suited to the Palm wireless infrastructure.

Currently, a select group of enterprises and partners are testing the Kenamea platform, which will be made commercially available mid-2001. Once the platform is released, Palm expects that its global community of licensees and enterprise developers will find the platform an attractive vehicle on which to commence developing a host of new compatibilities for Palm OS devices.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Palm has to understand enterprise mobile computing itself before embarking on that segment of the market. While making public statements of its strategy to get into the enterprise, we have not seen enough action. On the other hand, large systems integrators, such as IBM, EDS, Oracle and Sybase iAnywhere have taken upon themselves to support PalmOS.  Is this enough to move Palm into the enterprise? If we may suggest, Palm should hire high-visibility executives who understand the enterprise, give them money, mission and targets to get into the enterprise.  They should have centers of excellence for "Palm in the Enterprise".  Developers' conference is a good avenue but there should be an enterprise theme in these conferences.
