Psion Partners with NEC To Deliver Bluetooth Tech

Closely following the announcement that its agreement to develop a personal organizer that would double as a mobile phone with Motorola had fallen though, Psion PLC’s connectivity division, Psion Connect, has entered into a supply agreement with NEC Computers International Group’s divisions NEC Online (commercial markets) and Packard Bell (consumer market).

Under the terms of the agreement, Psion Connect will provide NEC with a range of Bluetooth solutions for desktops and mobile computers. Psion’s Bluetooth technology, including PC Cards and USB adapters, will be installed in NEC Online and Packard Bell products. With Psion’s Bluetooth Manager applications both NEC and Packard Bell customers will be able to establish and maintain wireless connections to other Bluetooth devices in a ten-meter range.

"Psion Connect is developing Bluetooth products in a variety of forms factors, said Tom Wright, Psion Connect’s chief operating officer. "Our first products will focus on the existing base of notebooks and desktops with the PC Card and USB products, while future products will be embedded."

Psion Connects agreement with NEC Computers is the latest in a string of deals with leading manufacturers, including Dell and Compaq.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: While this partnership will help, Psion must find a big partner to move it along its original and main path. We hope that this is a temporary setback.  We still believe in the fundamentals of a converged device.  We urge investment community to divert funds from esoteric applications of future with much uncertain future to something more fundamental like Psion's converged telephone-PDA product.
