NEWS TECHNOLOGY Baltimore Technologies Unveils e-Security Solution for Wireless and Wired Networks With the emergence of a growing mobile commerce marketplace, network operators will be confronted, sooner or later, with the problem of mass registration and authentication of mobile Internet users. To address the problem, Baltimore Technologies has developed a Telepathy Registration System that will enable network operators to register users and issue wireless digital certificates over- the-air to their mobile devices. The release of the Baltimore Telepathy Registration System will allow network operators, with minimal time and expense, to extend their wired Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) systems to a new wireless system. Furthermore, operators can do so with the assurance that security issues have been addressed. Jukka Koskinen, CEO of Certall, a leading Finland-based Commercial Certificate Authority, explained that the early release of the new Baltimore Telepath Registration System will allow Certall to quickly extend its trust services to wireless devices according to the Wireless PKI framework. He added that the wireless PKI has been defined by the WAP Forum and endorsed by MET as the global industry standard for the secure wireless environment and is fundamental to the future of mobile commerce.
The system’s unique architecture enables Trusted Certificate Authorities to extend their existing infrastructure to deliver wireless trust services such as validation and payment services," said John Fallon, director of Wireless at Baltimore Technologies. The company said the Baltimore Telepathy Registration Systems 1.0 prototype version is currently being used in early pilot projects and expects commercial release of version 1.1 on Windows NT during the second quarter of this year. They do not seem to be addressing these with the vigour that these problems deserve. First is the issue of wireless security. Second is the device management (configuration changes, application synchronization). They are still preoccupied with device form factor issues. We are heartened to see the Europeans show us the way with a solution to security problem. It is a good start. However, we must re-emphasize need for end-to-end security where one end is the device and the other end is application database store in the backend behind the firewall. in this context, Baltimore solution is a good start but not necessarily a complete solution. We like their use of existing infrastructure.Note: This news release may contain forward-looking statements.
