Certicom Introduces VPN for Wireless Devices

Leveraging its reputation as a wireless security specialist and the popularity of VPNs, Certicom is betting that the release of its Movian Virtual Private Network™ (VPN), offering interoperability with most VPN gateways and end-to-end security, will incise the large corporations to mobilize their workforce.

"VPNs are an essential security component of any enterprise that uses the Internet as an important communications backbone," said Jon Cordova, an analyst with Infonetics Research. "By releasing the first highly interoperable wireless VPN client, Certicom has enabled the mobile workforce to use business applications that require security."

Strengths of movianVPN

  • Interoperates with a vast number of VPN products from Cisco Systems, Inc., Nortel Networks, Alcatel, Check Point Software Technologies, Intel Corp., Radguard, and Symantec.
  • Implements IPSec/IKE protocols to ensure a secure tunnel for the encryption of all traffic between the wireless device and the VPN gateway.
  • Incorporates cryptographic technologies including Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) and Diffie-Hellman (DH) for the Internet Key Exchange (IKE).
  • Supports a variety of IP-enabled handheld devices running Palm OS 3.5 or WindowsCE 3.0, with future versions supporting Symbian-enabled devices.
  • Incorporates the standard form of VPN authentication, shared secret authentication with username and passwords, with other authentication methods to follow such as RADIUS and two-factor authentication using popular tokens.
  • Connects to Cellular, CDPD, PCS, or GSM networks that support IP data services. Users can also connect through a wired modem to their ISP.

Over 110 companies, from government, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, and finance services, participated in the beta testing of movianVPN, offering significant feedback to ensure the needs of IT managers were met. Several companies have signed contracts for the deployment of movianVPN such as Catholic Healthcare West – Phoenix ITS, Fujitsu, Genencor International and Cargill Incorporation.
