Kmart Rolls Out Corporate-Wide Wireless Solution

Committed to achieving its corporate objective of developing a customer-centric culture, Kmart Corporation, with stores and outlets worldwide, has entered into an agreement with Symbol Technologies to implement an in-store wireless and mobile computing solution across its entire chain.

"This technology [Symbol’s wireless solution] will build the infrastructure to enable every department company-wide to be linked and able to better satisfy and serve our customers," said Michael Jones, divisional vice president of IT and customer experience.

Components of Wireless Solution

  • Offers reliability, scalability, and flexibility
  • Facilitates both data and voice communications (Voice-Over-IP) over a single network
  • Open architecture designed to support IEEE 802.11 standard
  • Supports ITU H .323 multimedia standard
  • SpectrumSoft Wireless Network Management System 2.0 provides IT administrators with the tools to configure and manage the Spectrum24 networks, including
  • Cell association
  • Roaming
  • Random connections
  • Power management
  • PDT 6840 Wireless Handheld mobile computers will be used to utilize the following functions:
  • Receiving
  • Inventory and label printing
  • Price checking
  • Employee communications
  • Scanning devices will be incorporated to serve as price checkers for customers.
