NEWS ACQUISITIONS, MERGERS & AGREEMENTS Palm Out Sources E-Mail Functions to USA.NET In a move to allow it to focus on its core business, Palm, Inc. has entered into an agreement with USA.NET, a global eMessaging Service Provider, to manage and operate its e-mail and messaging functions of the Palm.Net service.Since its launch at the Comdex Show last year, Palm.Net® wireless service, with its iMessager™ applications, web clipping functions, for Palm VII and Palm VIIx users, has been generating quite a following that the Santa Clara company brought in USA.NET to host the service. Based on its track record of serving over 3,000 businesses including American Express, United Airlines, Hewlett-Packard, and Mail Boxes Etc., USA.NET’s hosting service will free Palm from the hassles of managing, upgrading and supporting an e-mail system. Commenting on the strategic move, Barry Cottle, chief operating officer for Content and Access at Palm, Inc, said, "Tapping into USA.NET’s secure and reliable messaging infrastructure provides us a base from which we can expand our e-mail solutions for wireless customers." For more information: http://www.prnewswire.com/ Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This is a good move on the part of Palm. Palm.net was OK if you were using Cingular formerly Bell South Access mechanism). That gave users narrow access choice. Now, the users will be able to subscribe to any wireless Internet service provider in their local territory for access and then access their company's e-mail service. Presumably, USA.Net will do the magic between typing company's url, userid and password on a smart phone and bringing the e-mail from the company's e-mail store. Good implementation, if our understanding is correct.Note: This news release may contain forward-looking statements.
