Webraska Accelerates Location-Based Services via Partnerships
With network operators on a
spending spree – investing billions for new mobile frequencies and
building infrastructure for 3G mobile phones – they are going to need,
sooner or later, to find new ways to generate revenue. The wireless mapmaker
Webraska is one company ready to offer these operators new opportunities to
increase their bottom line in the emerging location-based service market.
At the recent 3GSM World Congress, the French company took the
opportunity to demonstrate its technology as well as to announce several
partnership agreements.
Oracle
Webraska and Oracle demonstrated how mobile operators and application
developers could benefit from location-based services built-on Oracle9i
Application Server Wireless Edition. With a connector developed between
Oracle9i AS WE and Webraksa Personal Navigation API, both available on
Webraska’s software platform and via Webraska’s ASP centers, the
companies demonstrated a variety of location-based applications. One
application, for example, showed how a mobile user was guided from one point
to a selected destination using both maps and text instructions via a PDA or
WAP phone via SMS.
CT Motion
Webraska announced the development of a joint product with CT Motion, a
developer of location-based services. The product consists of CT Motion’s
M-Coupons application, City Beat, and Webraska’s Personal Navigation API.
Described as a great enabling application for m-commerce, the new product
will enable users to receive location based M-Coupons from CT Motion
applications, along with detailed directions to the merchant who issued the
coupon.
Nortel Networks
In an effort to hasten the availability of the high-speed wireless
Internet, the France-based company has entered into an agreement with Nortel
Networks to market integrated location-based services for the next
generation of networks. The companies will integrate Webraska’s wireless
navigation and spatial searching technology and applications with Nortel
Networks GPRS, UMTS and e-mobility Location Center infrastructure. The
location-based solution is expected to be available in Europe, North
America, and Asia beginning in the third quarter of this year.
IBM
In another joint development deal, Webraska signed on with IBM to
develop location-based services for applications developers, automotive and
telecom customers. Webraska’s wireless navigation software will become
part of IBM’s hardware for its PSeries and XSeries range of e-Server. IBM
will also integrate the Webraska offerings with its middleware platforms,
including WebSphere Everyplace Suite and DB2, the companies said in a joint
statement.

Mobileinfo Comments and
Advisory: This announcement is
an endorsement of Webraska's mapping technology by major vendors. It should be
noted that these are non-exclusive agreements. There are other mapping vendors
offering similar functionality, especially in North America. Nonetheless, we
welcome emergence of a strong player with backing from IBM, Nortel and others.
