NEWS TECHNOLOGY Ericsson Launches New Bluetooth Platform Taking Bluetooth technology to new heights is Sweden’ s Telefon AB LM Ericsson. At the CeBIT 2001 in Hannover, Germany this month, Ericsson will globally launch a new Bluetooth platform that allows users to get information, instantly, while on the move. Its catchy name ‘BLIP’ standing for Bluetooth Local Infotainment Point, if successful will, more than likely, become part of our lexicon. In the words of Peter Lundin general manager for the BLIP venture, "blipping while on the move will become as common as home surfing is today."Per Jakobsson, vice president of Ericsson Business Innovation, said with virtually any mobile device incorporating BLIP, users can have access to immediate information, relevant to them, from within a 10-meter radius. Ericsson is hoping that merchants and advertisers will see blipping as an ideal way of attracting customers or branding a product. For example, you pass by a shop and want to know the price and availability of an item in the window. Blip and you have the information – even though the shop is closed. A billboard advertising new ski wear catches your eye, and immediately you want to know more, blip and all the details are at your disposal. The Swedish company will sell the hardware but also plans to work with third party developers to create content solutions for BLIP.
