NEWS TECHNOLOGY Intel Discloses Wireless Agenda At the Intel Developer Forum in San Jose, California, the chip market Intel made a host of announcements including microprocessors in development, low-voltage mobile processors, and an Internet device, Web Tablet."We believe the trend towards thin and light, ultra mobile will only continue over time. We have redefined what we are doing for mobile microprocessors and chipsets," said Paul Otellini of Intel. in his keynote address at the Forum. For example, Intel will have 1GHz in production this quarter and the first Intel .13-micron processors will be mobile microprocessors, which will be delivered in the second quarter of this year, Mr. Otellini said. In addition, he said, the first Pentium® 4 notebook microprocessor will be rolled out, probably, next year. The Low Voltage mobile Pentium III processor 700 MHz Wireless Web Tablet The Web Tablet is powered by Intel’s StrongARM SA-1110 processors and StrataFlash™ memory and uses Wind River’s VxWorks real-time OS and Personal Jworks; the Espial Escape embedded browser and Espial Espresso Graphical User Interface component tool kit; and BeComm’s Strings software for rich audio. Intel expects to make the device available some time this year. Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Wireless web tablet is yet another device trying to find the problem it must solve. May be, we will find out when users vote for it in mid 2001 or 3Q 2001. Meanwhile, device choice for user community becomes richer but confusing. We would need device selection experts. Problem for IT professionals is obvious - do not bet on single device. Develop open multi-platform applications that will work with multiple devices.
