Nokia Unveils Multiple Payment Solution for M-Commerce

For m-commerce services to be adopted en mass, convenience and reliability are key components. Service providers will have to offer subscribers the convenience of multiple payment options and the assurance that payments will be managed and issued expediently and securely. Nokia recently announced its Payment Solution that it claims will mediate all forms of payment between all parties of the m-commerce service from the financial institution to the merchant to the customer.

The company says the Payment Solution is a platform that collects, manages and clears payment intuited from mobile phone users through various payment methods, such as credit and debit cards, operator’s pre-paid system, and a virtual purse, an integrated pre-paid account for specific applications.

Mobile users of WAP and Web-enabled terminals can purchase not only digital content, services, and products but also goods from vending machines as well as pay for services, such as parking fees. In addition, users can choose the most suitable payment method for each transaction; therefore, they are locked into any one pre-set method.

Operators using Nokia’s Payment Solutions can assure their subscribers that whether they are paying for a soft drink or making a bill payment their transaction will be issued securely. According to Heikki Heinaro, director of Mobile Internet Applications, operators and service providers will "become a consolidated channel, the trusted party, for all mobile payments." The solution supports flexible and secure authentication of payers without sacrificing the user-friendliness of services.

Technical Features

  • Network independence, server based solution supporting access to WAP 1.1 and 1.2.
  • Third generation mobile e-commerce applications will be supported.
  • Authentication and digital signatures between client and server are fulfilled by Wireless PKI technology.
  • Merchant Tool Kit, which enables content providers and merchants to price digital content and goods sold over the mobile Internet, is included.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We like Nokia's effort in introducing a payment system for common-place vending machines, parking machines, etc.  However, it will be a while before vending machines and parking meters get replaced by more advanced models.  But we are moving in the rifgt direction. This is an example of relatively easy application.  Enterprises and consumers alike would appreciate some relief from the virtual monopoly of credit card companies as the only payment media..
