NEWS PRODUCTS, SERVICES & APPLICATIONS Nortel and BT Cellular To Develop Wireless Net Apps Canadian communications company Nortel Networks has entered into an agreement with British mobile operator BT Cellnet to jointly develop applications for the next generation of mobile networks. Resources and expertise from both companies will be called upon in the development of these wireless applications from the conception stage through to the market launch.The two companies will work with third parties, such as content developers as well as suppliers and subscribers to develop applications that meet market demand and drive the adoption of wireless Internet services. Applications will be developed for the BT Cellnet GPRS network and will be adapted for migration to its future UMTS network, the British operator said. Dale Vile, head of business development at Nortel Networks, told a reporter with Total Telecom that to take advantage of BT’s test bed infrastructure, the test facility in Slough, England had been chosen. He added that the initial focus will be developing services for GPRS networks, but the companies will make sure that applications will be ultimately adaptable to the 3G networks. BT Cellnet said that applications will initially be developed for both the consumer market and business sector, but details of the applications were not disclosed.
