OpenGrid Licenses MobileQ's XMLEdge Platform to  Develop Applications for Hospitality Sector

OpenGrid joins a long list of location-specific application players that are out to change consumer-buying habits. OpenGrid will use MobileQ's XMLEdge platform to extend its expertise in time-and location-based solutions to develop mobile applications targeted at the hospitality and promotions sector.

Using virtually any mobile device, users will be able to access alerts and promotions, for example, purchasing discounted concert tickets or reserving a last-minute hotel reservation, then act on them immediately. Describing the benefits of the application, Eli Post, CEO of OpenGrid, said, "Focusing on the key applications areas, of messaging, content delivery, commerce, and promotions, we will provide the capability [for the user] to personalize and control the who, what, when, and where of how they interact wirelessly."

MobileQ’s XMLEdge version 2.6, an enterprise-grade infrastructure software, ensures that the information will be delivered to users in a manner that is to manipulate and optimized to fit the features and functionality of their device. This latest version of XMLEdge provides cross-platform UNIX® support for Sun Microsystems’ Solaris™ OS; integration into the Java and J2EE platforms; richer content through media support for images; and enhanced administrative and deployment tools, the company said.

Changing consumer-buying habits is not an easy feat, thus it will remain to be seen if consumers will use their mobile devices and action-oriented applications, such as the one OpenGrid is proposing, to indulge in the latest products and services.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  We expect that location-based applications and services will take a while to become common place. The whole location-specific sector has a number of unanswered questions in the short run, including consumer habits, willingness to accept advertising messages unless they are pulled (versus pushed) by the user and how much advertising a user may accept. Nonetheless, location-based advertising will happen - later and in less intense form than what advertising industry would want.

We like OpenGrid's approach in targeting a vertical industry like hospitality - a more likely sector to succeed with location-specific applications. Domain knowledge of a vertical industry is important in location-specific applications..
