NEWS ACQUISITIONS, MERGERS & AGREEMENTS QUALCOMM Wireless Business Solutions Acquires Eaton FleetAdvisor System Since 1988 with the introduction of OmniTRACS® mobile communications system, QUALCOMM Incorporated has been continually expanding its presence in the transportation industry. Recently, the San Diego-based company’s Wireless Business Solutions division acquired the assets of Eaton’s Trucking Information Services business unit, including its FleetAdvisor®, a transportation logistics and management system. The purchase price including cash payment and compensation based on sales of FleetAdvisor software and OmniTRACS systems was not disclosed.With the acquisition of Eaton’s FleetAdvisor system, which comprises of hardware and software elements, QUALCOMM intends to expand its MVPc™ in-vehicle computer offering. For new and existing customers of the MVPc, a Windows CE-based platform that runs on custom or third party applications, can expect to be offered a broad set of applications. FleetAdvisor’s expansive set of applications will be attractive "to our private fleet, truckload and LTL customers," said Chris Wolfe, senior vice president and general manager of QUALCOMM Wireless Business Solutions. Under the terms of the agreement, QUALCOMM has hired Eaton’s employees with expertise in the development and customer support of the system in order to service FleetAdvisor’s current customers. In addition, Eaton will promote QUALCOMM’s OmniTRACS system through its Roadranger sales and service. In the future the two companies intend to explore further strategic relationships for developing and marketing products and services for vehicle monitoring, diagnostics, and prognostics, QUALCOMM said. They have had original version of OmniTRACS since 1994. Perhaps they were preoccupied with CDMA. However, you need domain knowledge. Perhaps they should create a separate subsidiary with its own P&L. There is a lot of opportunity and competition now in fleet management. Why not expand in Telematics.
