Baltimore Security Solution Embedded in New Generation of Ericsson SmartPhones

Baltimore Technologies said that Ericsson will embed its digital certificate technology in its next generation of smartphones, initially, the GSM phone R380, with the GPRS phone R520 to follow. Besides taking advantage of the smartphone’s dual functionality–a mobile phone and PDA– users will also benefit from Baltimore Telepathy wireless e-security product and service offering, the wireless security company said.

In the Ericsson R380, Baltimore Telepathy root certificates are embedded into the WAP browsers, providing the security to conduct authenticated wireless transactions, such as m-banking. According to the Swedish phone manufacturer, the R380 is the first commercially available mobile Internet device with root certificates pre-installed.

Commenting on the built-in security functionality, Bo Albertson, marketing director communications with Ericsson Mobile Communications, said, "The inclusion of Baltimore digital certificates in our new phones allows early introduction of secure mobile transactions enabling the phone to become a personal trusted device."

While Ericsson can now market their smartphones as truly personal trusted devices, Baltimore is looking to offer digital certificates for Internet sites and to provide enhanced security for mobile commerce transactions.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: A good validation of Baltimore digital security software. R380 appears to be a capable second-generation (may be 1.5) smartphone (after Nokia's bulky 9000).With secure software, R380 could be used for more secure applications like m-commerce. Ericsson, please reduce the price now. You will have to do it anyhow in the next six months. Why not now and sell a few more and reduce the time for adoption for smartphones?
