British Airways Offers a Taste of Futuristic Travel

British Airways has joined forces with the American mobile computing provider Xybernaut Corporation to take the frustration out of airline travel while offering a taste of futuristic travel.

Over a period of three days last week, British Airways check-in agents at Terminal 4 donned Xybernaut’s queue buster, a portable computer check-in device. While roaming the airport wearing the mobile computer, agents can carry out spot check-ins.

The queue buster comprises of three separate components: a keyboard is worn on the forearm of the agent with a head mounted mini display, comparable to a 15 inch full screen and a battery worn as a belt.

During the second day of the trial, British Airways said that passengers were intrigued by the technology and the efficiency of the device.

No details beyond the trial were available. If British Airways goes forth with full deployment across all its airport agencies, airport line-ups and delays may become a distant memory.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Xybernaut's wearable computers will not solve the lineup problem because it requires BA's agents to use these.  Therefore, this was an interesting experiment which would help improve service at the curbside and perhaps check-in of premium class business passengers.  The real solution is in self-check in which several airlines are experimenting with.
