iPass Partners with Certicom to Provide Secure Remote Internet Access

Worldwide network operator iPass Inc. has partnered with security specialist Certicom to allow the business traveler access to corporate data from anywhere in the world. The agreement is all-inclusive, covering marketing to research and development to training.

iPass’ Connect PDA, which supports both Palm OS and PocketPC, enables mobile users with a notebook or PDA, to access the Internet and corporate data using iPass’s global network ,with over 10,000 points of presence in over 150 countries worldwide. By using Certicom’s movianVPN™ to create a secure connection between the client and the company gateway, iPass users are ensured that all corporate data is secure across the airwaves. Certicom’s movianVPN is an interoperable VPN client for handhelds that implements IPSec/IKE protocols for establishing a VPN connection to encrypt all traffic between the device, such as Palm and Windows CE, and the company gateway.

With their iPassConnect PDA client, a business traveler would simply establish a wireline connection to launch movianVPN, creating a secure VPN channel between itself and the gateway, and once logged on, they would have access to the company databases and files.

"Leveraging Certicom’s expertise in mobile security with iPass’ extensive remote access network allows us to meet the needs of an increasingly mobile workforce," said Michael Mansouri, chairman and CEO of iPass.

"movianVPN places the resources of the enterprise literally at the user’s fingertips, and iPass provides the connectivity to do it seamlessly from anywhere in the world with a dial-up connection," said Jennifer Vancini, co-managing director of movianVPN at Certicom.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Wireless VPN market is coming alive. We expect more action here. Columbitech from Sweden is launching their solution too.  But Certicom is a more acceptable name in North America, even though we think, Columbitech solution is superior because it goes beyond the firewall into the application server. iPass's use of Certicom is a strong validation for Certicom.
