NEWS TECHNOLOGY Mobile Connection to ATMs via Bluetooth Tech, NCR Plans Can ATMs move beyond being cash dispensers to becoming fulfillment centers for mobile services? At the ATMIA Conference in Clearwater, Florida, Mel Walter, NCR Corporation’s Mobility Program Director, addressed the question in his keynote speech on the theme of mobility fulfillment. (NCR provides Relationship technology and self-service solutions to host of vertical markets from banking to manufacturing.) Mr. Walter proposed that the combination of Bluetooth technology and NCR’s Self-Service TouchPoints™ could offer a range of services. By enabling a Bluetooth-compatible phone to communicate with the ATM, a host of services could be delivered via the existing ATM infrastructure. Commenting on the presentation Nicholas Hames, vice-president of NCR Canada’s Financial Solutions Division, said "Modern Self-Service TouchPoints, either ATMs or Web kiosks, could offer a wide range of services to customers. Access to mobile media and the print and delivery facilities available at the machines could open up a number of new opportunities for those with a mobile lifestyle" Instead of an individual ordering theater tickets on-line and waiting for delivery, they could use their Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone at their nearest ATM not only to order tickets but to have them printed instantly. Thus the ATM could prove to be the crucial delivery mechanism. In addition, Self-Service TouchPoints, ATMs or Web-kiosks, can offer a full-size screen, a high-quality printer, and an high level of security that mobile phones could never be able to offer. You will need more modern andnew breed of ATMs and fatter networks. These ATM beasts are not only heavy but expensive - not because of the computing power but megatons of steel reinforcements to make them physically secure.
